[NEW MENU] SARASO Padang Peranakan Cuisine

I was back again to Saraso Restaurant to try some of their new menus a week ago. Saraso Restaurant serves Peranakan Padanese cuisine, which combines two cultures together; Peranakan way of cooking and native Padangnese architecture’s of spices. The word Saraso itself means Serasa in Bahasa Indonesia; that’s why Saraso Restaurant produces a variety of Padang Peranakan cuisine, which has been adapted to the plurality of Jakartans. I’ve reviewed this restaurant before, so you can see the atmosphere of the restaurant from the following link: Kuliner Padang Peranakan di Saraso, City Walk, Jakarta Pusat.

Although the cuisine here is not purely authentic Padang, but the manner of presentation and the taste is not much different. It’s because this restaurant always brings ingredients directly from Minang to maintain the flavor of the food. We can simply order what we want from the book menu, and they will serve it to us. On this visit, we tried something new, such as Es Timun, Ikan Alu Alu Tauco, Ikan Tongkol Asem Pade, Soto Padang and Sayur Lodeh. All the food is yummy and we liked their new menu, especially the Ikan Alu Alu Tauco and Ikan Tongkol Asem Pade.

Es Timun, IDR 19K - NEW MENU

As the name implies, this drink is made from cucumber. A simple drink where shaved cucumber mixed with simple syrup and ice cubes. It tastes sweet and refreshing.

Soto Padang, IDR 27K - NEW MENU

A beef broth with slices of beef, garlic, potato chip, onion, and plan-fried dumpling of potato. The soup broth was a bit salty, but the combination of meat and its contents taste good.

Sate Padang, IDR 35.8K

Another specialty meal from Padang, made from dice-cut beef with spicy sauce made of turmeric, ginger, garlic, coriander, curry powder, and salt. Although it’s written spicy on the menu, in fact, it’s not spicy at all. The meat is tender and delicious, best eaten when still warm. We can choose from 3 varieties, such as beef meat, tongue, or a mix of both.

Ikan Bilih Lado Ijo, IDR 19K

Spicy anchovies served on a snacking plate, a good choice for appetizer. Ikan Bilih or sometimes called as Ikan Bilis, is a small freshwater fish that is widely available in the Danau Singkarak and Danau Maninjau, Sumatera Barat, Padang. It feels very crisp, tasty and best enjoyed with Lado Ijo (Sambal Hijau).

Ikan Alu Alu Tauco, IDR 23.9K - NEW MENU

The fish meat has a dense texture, and does not smell fishy. The light flavor of coconut milk and tauco blends nicely. A few slices of green chilies also enrich the taste of this dish. Favorite!

Ikan Tongkol Asem Pade, IDR 23.9K - NEW MENU

Asam Pade (Asam Pedas) is also one of the traditional cuisines of the Minangkabau. This dish has a sour and spicy taste that blends perfectly. If you love spicy dish, I recommend you to try it. Favorite!

Ikan Teri Petay Balado, IDR 22K - NEW MENU

A unique combination of Petay (smelly beans), anchovies and Balado sauce. The petay meat is cut in such a way and fried until it has a crisp texture. You won’t even realize that it’s actually petay dish.

Dendeng Batokok Lado Merah, IDR 54K (small)
Dendeng Garing Lado Merah, IDR 37K (small)

Dendeng Batokok often called as Dendeng Balado, is also a special and famous dish in Padang. Thinly sliced dried beef meat topped with Lado Merah (sambal merah). If you don’t like chili, you can opt in Dendeng Garing, which served with Lado Merah separate on the side.

Overall, I really enjoyed all the food in Saraso. Though it may not be as authentic like other Padang restaurants, but the flavors and the seasonings between the Peranakan way of cooking and Padangnese spices blend so well.
