[JAPAN] Delicious Okonomiyaki Dinner at Tsuruhashi Fugetsu Dotonbori, Osaka

I’ve heard a lot about Tsuruhashi Fugetsu in Dotonbori area, Osaka, Japan from the internet, and many tourists, and the local people recommend this place. Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is one of the famous Okonomiyaki chain restaurants in Japan and claimed to be the number #1 Okonomiyaki Restaurant. We wanted to try the authentic Okonomiyaki because Okonomiyaki is one of our favorite Japanese dishes, so I put this place on the list of must-visit when we traveled to Japan last July 2014. Oh, btw, if you need travel ideas, places to go and where to eat in Japan, you can click here to see the full itinerary!. And you know what? The trip to Tsuruhashi Fugetsu was worth it!

The dining room at Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is quite small and packed neatly in spite of all the dining tables come side by side with a simple wooden bulkhead. Each table is equipped with Teppanyaki frying plate, and an English menu is available on the side to make tourist easier to place an order.

From the menu, we realized that Tsuruhashi Fugetsu offer not only the original Okonomi-yaki, but also Modan-yaki. As you all may already know, “Yaki” means grilled or cooked. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake containing a variety of ingredients, where cabbage, yams (sweet potatoes), meat, fish and shellfish, and eggs are mostly used in each Okonomiyaki. While Modanyaki is a modern version of Okonomiyaki that comes with noodle.

After sifting through the menu, we changed our mind and finally decided to order one Modanyaki, which we have never tried before in our life. Modanyaki is slightly more expensive than the Okonomiyaki, but do not worry because all the prices on the menu already nett, including taxes

Without giving any explanation, suddenly the waiter came to prepare the dish in front of us. We have to be extra careful because the hot plate will get very hot to cook the food. The batter seems already mixed with the ingredients that we’ve ordered, which is the Kansai or Osaka cooking style. Then, the waiter fried both sides of Okonomiyaki, and eventually topped it with Otafuku (thick and sweet Okonomiyaki sauce), Japanese mayonnaise, and Aonori (seaweed flakes).

After it’s finished cooked, we can use the metal spatulas to slice the okonomiyaki. Generous amount of cabbage and noodles made our tummy easily full even though I’ve shared together with my husband that night. We loved the crispy outer layer of Okonomiyaki and tangy flavor of the Okonomiyaki sauce that blended perfectly with the mayonnaise. Although the amount of Japanese mayonnaise and the Okonomiyaki sauce on top was a bit too much (overly sweet) in accordance to our liking, we still enjoyed it.

Yup, it was our very first experience with Modan-yaki, and we loved it! There’re many other ingredients on the menu, but we couldn’t eat anymore. But, hey, actually there’s a note on the English menu, that each person must order at least one dish. So, I guess we’re lucky that night! Ha..Ha… However, we would love to come back again one day! If you’re in Japan and planning to visit Osaka, don’t forget to try the delicious Okonomiyaki or Modanyaki at Tsuruhashi Fugetsu
