[NEW SPOT] From China, Huang Ji Huang Three Sauce Simmer Pot Now Open in Jakarta

Huang Ji Huang, Three Sauce Simmer Pot is a China-based restaurant chain that opened recently, five days ago (February 12, 2015) at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta. You’ll easily find them if you’re familiar with the PIK area. This restaurant is located nearby Northpole the dessert house, and right next to Toni and Guy Salon. We spotted this new restaurant when we were having no idea of where to go for lunch on Valentine’s day. Ha-ha.. When I stepped in, I smell a quite strong herbs flavor, similar to Bak Kut Teh, so I think this is another new Bak Kut Teh restaurant. But apparently when I asked the waiter, they explained to me, that Huang Ji Huang specialized in the stew pots menu, so we decided to give it a try.

Huang Ji Huang Jakarta has a spacious dining area and separated into two sections, smoking and non-smoking area. Each table is equipped with an electric hot plate in the middle of it.

We also noticed there are six certificates of Huang Ji Huang Restaurant‘s achievement that hung on the side wall between smoking and the non-smoking areas.

History of Huang Ji Huang on the first page of the menu seems interesting, and it says that the recipe originated from the royal kitchens of the Qing dynasty. It took a while for us to choose something from the menu because we were surprised by their price. For example, one stew pot of braised shrimp (frozen fresh) will cost around IDR 298K before tax and service, and braised chicken wings will cost around IDR 208K before tax and service. But then there was a beautiful woman who cannot speak Bahasa Indonesia fluently, came to our table, and asked what we like. She offered me to try Chicken Wings, and we ordered the Shrimp, and Pork Ribs as well. From there, we realized on the back page of the menu; we can combine 3 to 5 ingredients in one pot. Yay!!! In this way, the overall cost becomes less expensive than ordering just one ingredient to the whole pot, but, of course, this depends on how many people and how many ingredients you can eat.

For the sauce, they have five kinds of sauce; normal soy sauce, spicy sauce, salty seafood sauce, spicy seafood sauce, and the Mala Sauce (aromatic spicy) sauce. Without doubt, we opt-in to try the Mala sauce (their specialty sauce), even though, the waiter said, it’s very spicy compared with the normal spicy sauce. Not long after that, the waiter came back, and she brought all of our ingredients came in separate plastic containers. It came along with the garlic butter, Wan Sui vegetable, ten kinds of vegetables, and the Mala (Aromatic Spicy) sauce.

Now, it becomes more interesting. I saw all the process when the waiter places everything carefully into the stew pot. She started by placing the garlic butter in the middle of the pan, and then ten kinds of fresh vegetables. After she had spread all the fresh vegetables, she began to put the meat (chicken wings and pork ribs) on top of the vegetables. She also added some Chinese herbs as the seasoning before simmering the pot.

Less than 10 minutes, when the meat has been cooked, she added the shrimp on top of it and simmered the pot again for a while.

Once everything is ready, she placed the glue-like Mala (aromatic spicy) sauce on top of it. The sauce itself was very thick, just like the caramelized spicy sauce.

Simmered again for a while and voila! Yes, finally!! The combination of these three ingredients has been cooked in a stew pot and is now ready to be eaten. It took at least 15-20 minutes for all processes. Although it’s quite long, the waiter cooked it all right in front of us. It was a fun dining experience for us that day!

I was very tempted by the aroma of herbs and spicy sauce of this stew pot when the cooking process was complete. The portion was quite big, and I thought, it can share up to 3-4 people, but it depends on how much the size of the meal per person. We could not finish it, so we wrap the rest to take home (there’s an extra cost IDR 5K for the takeaway plastic container).

We truly enjoyed everything, especially the strong spicy flavor of Mala Sauce and all the Chinese spices that seep into the meat. All was tasty and absolutely mouthwatering! If you’re a fan of spicy Chinese food, I recommend you to try Huang Ji Huang Restaurant Jakarta and perhaps to come in a group of minimum 3-4 people due to the size of the stew pot.

  1. Thanks for sharing your awesome food diary. That one pot meal is so interesting, and with so many different ingredients and sauces put together, that is sure to make one spectacular meal. The place looks really simple yet very welcoming, and the conduction stove at the middle is a well-thought of addition. The only thing that gets heated is the pot, not the table or the dinners, making it a truly comfortable place to eat freshly cooked food at the table.
