[NEW SPOT] Medanese Cuisine Babura Dimsum Steamboat NOW Open in Jakarta

Last night, we had dinner with our good friends at Babura Dim Sum and Steamboat Restaurant Jakarta in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), which recently held a soft opening on February 14, 2015 (last Saturday). I knew this newly opened restaurant, thanks to Polinda and her husband, Andy, who made a phone call to us and asked us to visit this restaurant together. Babura Dim Sum Steamboat Restaurant PIK is a new branch from Medan because this restaurant is indeed originally from Medan, and the name is taken from a street address in Medan where they opened their first restaurant there.

Because this restaurant is fairly new around the block, there were not many visitors, but we realized there was the owner, and his friends gathered last night. Babura Dim Sum Steamboat is one of the best places that serves dim sum in Medan. They offer a wide variety of dim sum which appealing and unique on the menu, so we ordered some of the best based on my friend’s recommendation. Yes, I trust them because they often eat at this restaurant for a long time and whenever they come back to Medan.

Paikut Steam (steamed pork ribs), IDR 25K - non halal

Pork Ribs is undoubtedly one of my favorites. The flavor of this steamed pork ribs was nice, but unfortunately it wasn’t as tender as what I expected.

Sayap Ayam (Panggang) - Grilled Chicken Wings, IDR 25K

I thought the chicken wings came with bones, but not at all. It was a processed chicken with a form of chicken wings, which stuffed with salty egg in the middle of the chicken. So unique and tasty!

 Siomay Dwi Telur, IDR 22K

I never found a siomay like this before in other Chinese food restaurants in Jakarta. The size of this steamed shrimp dumplings was quite big because it’s also stuffed with two types of eggs; Century eggs and quail eggs. It was absolutely delicious!

Siomay Chi Chai (Seaweed), IDR 22K

We also liked this version of steamed shrimp dumplings so much! They covered it with seaweed, really delicious!

Leng Hong Kien, IDR 30K

Leng Hong Kien at Babura also one of the best dim sum. Processed fried minced shrimp covered with a layer of mayonnaise and sprinkled with white sesame seeds.

Hatosi (Shrimp Toast), IDR 25K

Hatosi was very similar to fried shrimp balls. There’s a layer of fried bread with fried shrimp on top. It tasted crisp and not too greasy.

Ifumie Binjai, IDR 32K (small)

Ifumie Binjai is also a chef recommendation’s on the menu. A crispy fried yellowish egg noodles served with sauteed vegetables mixed with chicken. I‘m a fan of Ifumie since childhood, but unfortunately this one tasted ordinary, nothing special in this Ifumie.

Kwetiaw Polos, IDR 18K (small) - non halal

Although this Kwetiaw (flat rice noodles) just plain cooked with bean sprouts, and vegetables, I prefer this one than the Ifumie in the picture above. Mild salty flavor and the fragrant of Medanese soy sauce tasted simply nice. And the best thing that I’ve found is, they served it with Bak You Phok (made from the dregs of the fried pork skin, which tasted so crisp and crunchy) as complementary.

Gado Gado Vietnam, IDR 40K (small)

Gado Gado Vietnam is actually an appetizer at Babura, but we ordered it last before going home. Ha-ha.. The combination of jellyfish, a few slices of shredded chicken meat, vegetables, cabbage, carrot and cucumber slices, completed with sweet sour and salty seasoning, was perfectly mixed. Everything tasted so fresh and tasted delicious! We loved it so much!

Overall from our last night experience, Babura Dim Sum and Steamboat Restaurant is one of the best-tasting dim sums around Jakarta. Although the price is slightly higher than the first outlet in Medan, we will still go back again to Babura Jakarta. Staff were friendly and attentive, convenient ambiance, delicious taste of various dim sum, makes Babura Dim Sum Steamboat become one of our favorite Chinese food restaurants in the list. Highly recommended to visit if you’re a fan of Chinese food and around North Jakarta!
