[NEW SPOT] Soup-less Soba at Yamatoten Abura Soba Tokyo, Now Open in Jakarta

Oh my gosh! There’s another new restaurant newly opened last Friday night at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), called Yamatoten Abura Soba that brought from Tokyo. Yamatoten Abura Soba first launched in Shinjuku, Tokyo since 2011, and now they opened the first branch in North Jakarta. I went there earlier today, because I was so curious about this restaurant and our friends who live near this area, told us that we had to try it. Yes, because both of us are a fan of Japanese food, we decided to try it. It’s located on the same row with Pisang Ijo, and Cake A Boo.

To give you an idea what’s about Yamatoten Abura Soba, I’m going to share some information that I’ve read on the menu. So, Abura Soba itself literally translated as “oil soba“, a type of noodle served without soup or broth that was created in Musashino, Tokyo in 1950’s. But don’t worry, because Abura Soba is not oily at all, and so easy on the taste buds. They don’t use any kinds of preservatives, chemical seasonings or synthetic coloring agents and choose to use vegetable oilย instead of lard.

It seems like Yamatoten Abura Sobaย really focus on what they’re good at because there are only five main dishes available on the menu; four types of noodles, and one rice dish. In addition, they also offer several side dishes, and some favorite side dishes are the Handmade Dumpling, Chicken Karaage, Soft Broiled Pork, and Wasabi Potato Salad.ย Oh btw, these favorite side dishes were sold out when we came, and we got to wait until 6pm for them to be ready.

Karami Ontama Abura Soba, IDR 68K - non halal

Ok, so this was the first bowl which we’ve tried today! Karami Ontama looks similar to the original version of Abura Soba, but this one served with half boiled egg (Onsen Tamago). It tasted a little bit spicy because it’s soaked in a secret mix of Spicy Miso sauce, and when I mix it with two rounds vinegar and two rounds of chili oil, turned out to be a bit creamy. We loved it! The vinegar oilย wasn’t that strong, not as I thought. Everything was perfectly blended together! If you love spicy noodle, and egg, you can opt-in Karami on your order.

How to eat Abura Soba? There are 3 steps to enjoy the Abura Soba. Check out this short video from our YouTube Channel:

Abura Soba Original, IDR 59K - non halal

We accidentally met our friends Kinsky when she was about to go home from Abura Soba. She said the original version also tasted good, so I decided to order some more, to taste the difference between Karami and this one. It’s top with the same ingredients; chopped spring onions, sesame seeds, bamboo shoots, dried seaweeds, and slices of tender roast pork, but this one served with a secret mixture of oilย and shoyu. It was delicious though tasted saltier than Karami Ontama. However, this version instantly became our favorite as well.

Chicken Karaage, IDR 36K

Time passed, and before we go home, we accidentally met another friend, Ruby. He recommended us to try the Chicken Karaage, and, fortunately, Chicken Karaage was ready at that time. So, yup! We decided to give it a try! Apparently these boneless chicken was fried without a thick batter. They use chicken thighs that have been marinated, very juicy and tender on the inside. Another favorite of the day!!

Overall from our experience, we loved the thick and springy noodle texture, the flavor, and everything else. For those of you who can’t eat pork, do not worry because they also offer Jya-Jya Abura Soba that comes with choices of pork or chicken meat. We will definitely come back for more and last but not least, congratulations for the Soft Opening!
