Not long ago I visited Ozumo Japanese Restaurant, which recently opened a new branch in Gading Serpong. Located in a row of shophouses a few blocks away before the Holland Bakery and Staples (art and craft store), Ozumo occupies two floors decorated with lots of minimalist and cute Japanese caricatures on the wall. The bright yellow color on the exterior also seems to attract the attention of passers-by on the main road of Gading Serpong. From the book menu, I realized that this restaurant is under the same management with Hachimaki restaurant that located in Central Park Mall, West Jakarta.
This new branch has just opened a few days, and we were not allowed to sit on the 2nd floor because according to the waiter, the dining area on the 2nd floor was not ready yet. But because we were curious, we ended up taking some pictures on the 2nd floor before returning home. Hehehe..
I was quite surprised when I saw their menu. Not only desserts, but Ozumo also offers a variety of Japanese food; from appetizers, side dishes, donburi set, bento box, curry rice, kimchi chahan, ramen, udon, sushi, sashimi, and specialty sushi roll. All meals come with an affordable price; that’s why we were tempted to order some food that looks interesting on the menu, check this out guys!
Tori Karaage, IDR 19K
These bite-sized pieces of Japanese-style fried chicken looked alike with popcorn chicken because they served it with salt and pepper powder on the side. I liked it! Crispy fried onions were sprinkled on top, and a squeeze of lemon added before eating made me addicted with this appetizer. The chicken meat was wonderfully light and crispy, yet still succulent on the inside.
Bogi Roll, IDR 30K (4 pieces) / IDR 59K (8 pieces)
Bogi Roll is one of the favorite sushi rolls at Ozumo, which was recommended by the waiter that day. It’s made with a combination of seared chopped salmon with mayonnaise on top, together with Kani and avocado wrapped on the inside. The crunchy tempura with unagi sauce that served on the side become a good companion as well. It looked simple, but it tasted so good!
Hanabi Roll, IDR 23K (4 pieces) / IDR 45K (8 pieces)
Hanabi Roll is also one of the favorite sushi rolls at Ozumo. It had a lovely red-green color combination on top made from thin slices of fresh tuna and fresh avocado. Each sushi roll consisted of Kani wrapped inside, garnished with long seaweed and tobiko on top. Not only attractive, but the unagi sauce made this sushi tasted even more delicious!
Chicken Katsu Curry, IDR 33K
Although the curry sauce may not be authentic, this curry rice was much better than the one we’ve tried at Itadak**** PIK. They use a good quality rice, and we enjoyed this meal, even though the Chicken Katsu was quite thin. But with only 33K, what do you expect?
Rilakkuma Pudding, IDR 25K
Last but not least, it’s time for some desserts. We enjoyed the Rilakkuma Pudding presented in 3 flavors; Melon, Chocolate, and Mango. This pudding was simple and not overly sweet.
Poppy Ice Cream, IDR 25K
We also had the most favorite dessert at Ozumo, called Poppy Ice Cream. At first, I thought this ice cream made from poppy seeds, but apparently poppy is merely for naming. The ice cream available in 3 flavors, and we chose the Coffee flavor! They presented the ice cream in a super cute Toilet mug made from plastic, and they also added some chocolate biscuits and cute tiny chips of chocolate sprinkled on top. It was delicious!
Overall from our dinner experience, we enjoyed everything from the beginning. Quick service, fast response, and friendly waiter, plus with the affordable prices and good food, made us want to come back again. So, if you are looking for a decent Japanese food at a reasonable price, I would recommend you to visit Ozumo.
