My sister in law who had lived and studied in Japan for many years, told me that we should enjoy Japanese seasonal fruits when visiting Japan. I was curious and trying to figure out when I was in Japan for two weeks during our summer holiday. There are plenty of different fresh fruits compared to what we usually find in Jakarta. And we truly admire how fresh and adorable those fruits available in Japan, such as strawberries, Japan peaches, cherries, and many more. We spotted these beautiful strawberries when we visited the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan last week. This is probably the best strawberries I’ve ever seen so far! The red, bright color and the big shape of these strawberries are truly outstanding!
During the summer, Japanese peaches, commonly known as MOMO Fruit, are in season. I’ve committed to myself that I had to get them while I was in Japan. By the time we landed in Tokyo, we immediately hunt these lovely peaches from the fruit shops. But mostly we buy these peaches from the AEON supermarket that located near to where we were staying (Iwamotocho). We enjoyed peaches every night during our stay in Tokyo. Ha-ha.. It’s because we fell in love with its juicy white flesh and sweet tastes of Japanese peaches since the first bite.
Not to forget, the small red and delicious beads kissed by the summer sun; Cherries! Yes, Cherries are very popular as an early summer fruit. They are tastier when eaten raw because freshness is the key; that’s why we should eat them as soon as possible. Yamagata produces around 70% of all the cherries in Japan. Yamagata Prefecture is located in the southwest corner of Tōhoku, facing the Sea of Japan.
I’m not familiar with Tohoku area, but I’ve heard there are lots of tourist attractions in Tohoku as well. Tohoku (東北) is the North-East region, which includes six prefectures as shown below. I’m planning to visit Tohoku someday when I had a chance to visit Japan again. However, I will regularly update information about Tohoku, in terms of history, culinary, beautiful places, and perhaps some reference for my next destinations in Tohoku, Japan.
