[SURABAYA] A Wonderful Staycation Experience at Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya

I never thought that finally I came back to Surabaya again. It was my second visit to Surabaya and this time we stayed in Shangri-La Surabaya for two nights, and we had a wonderful experience during our stay. That’s why I want to share all the memorable things that we had at this hotel. Shangri-La Surabaya is a luxury 5-star hotel that provides comfortable rooms, suites and exceptional dining experiences and cuisines at the hotel. Even though it’s an old hotel, Shangri-La Surabaya still has its charm that makes people coming back and stay at this hotel. With my husband, Andy Handoko, we arrived in Surabaya with a morning flight and were picked up by a limo service that has a WiFi service in the car. Kewl!

Without any constraints, we can go straight into our bedroom. The seamless in-room check-in process becomes part of the personal service provided by Shangri-La Surabaya. It may be one of the reasons why business travelers, local guests, and tourists choose Shangri-La Surabaya as a one-stop destination when in Surabaya. The spacious room, very clean, and very comfortable bed made us want to stay here longer.

Lunch at Shang Palace

Shang Palace known as one of the popular Chinese food restaurants at Shangri-La Hotel in worldwide that serve Cantonese delights for diners. We went there for lunch and try the new menu called ‘Rooted in Nature’, which means all the ingredients mostly sourced from local people in Surabaya. Although yes, there are some ingredients are imported from outside. We started our palate with double boiled sea cucumber with dried scallops, chicken and herb Cordyceps Flower. Ah! The soup was indeed a good starter! Followed with oven baked Salmon Fillet with Black Pepper Sauce, Shang Palace’s Horenzo Bean Curd with Shimeji mushrooms, and move on to Sauteed sliced beef with garden greens and mushrooms in Oyster sauce. The sliced beef was extremely tender, and the soup had a very good flavor! Finally finished with the double boiled sweetened pear in tangerine tea. The boiled pear as one of the signature desserts at Shang Palace, was served warm, so soft and comforting!

Chi, The Spa at Shangri-La Hotel

Spa massage at Chi, The Spa at Shangri-La Surabaya left us a memorable experience. I tried the Maduranis Massage focusing on my leg while my husband tried the Balinese Massage that focuses on his leg, but the full body massage was equally to relieve tension and stimulate our metabolism. It was very relaxing!

Since we were staying in the Horizon Deluxe room located on the 14th floor of Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya, we can access the Horizon Lounge. Not only us, but everyone who stays on the Horizon floor can enjoy a selection of canapes, and free flow wine starts at 6 pm. Yay! Do not miss to try the mushroom quiche, one of my favorites.

Our room was quite spacious and very comfortable, so that makes us sleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning. When we passed through the lobby lounge, I was reminded of the same Lobby Lounge at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta. There I realized that the ambiance of the lobby lounge of Shangri-La Hotel is so typical, very spacious with gorgeous red sofa. Many large windows that allow sunlight into the lobby and visitors can see the beauty of the park through this window. How nice!

Shortly after that, both of us went straight to Jamoo Restaurant, which is located right in front of the pool for breakfast. Jamoo Restaurant is an all-day dining café and restaurant, that was awarded as one of the Best Restaurants in 2015 by Indonesia Tatler. With the kind assistance of Renny Herwanto, one of the hotel managers, we were allowed to take some food photos around the pool area. She’s very kind and attentive during our stay. Thank you so much, Ren, you’re very helpful! 🙂

Lunch at Nishimura

Shangri-La has different cuisines available for everyone to discover at the hotel. If you want Japanese food, Nishimura is the right option when you’re in Surabaya. The restaurant nicely decorated with Japanese minimalist decor, and we really enjoyed our lunch at Nishimura. I would like to recommend you to try the Tokujyo Sashimi Moriawase, which is one of their signature dishes. In addition to fresh sashimi, we also tried some other favorite dishes, such as Chicken Katsu Bento, Shokado Bento, and Aburi Shake Salada Maki. Oh, don’t forget to order Chawan Mushi, it’s still one of the best I’ve tried so far!

Dinner at Desperados Grill and Bar

On the last night, we enjoyed a variety of western food available at Desperados. Desperados Grill and Bar serves Grill and Steakhouse cuisine is a grill and bar with a pretty romantic atmosphere. We started with Half Avocado filled with shrimp, red onion, and mango salsa that was delicious. But the highlight of our dinner was the BBQ Pork Spare Ribs, so tender and full of flavors! Not to forget, the Rib Eye, which was cooked at a medium level, perfectly grilled, succulent and tasty! If you are a fan of burgers, don’t forget to try the Black Jack Burger, their signature burger. It’s a Grilled Cajun Spiced Beef Burger stuffed with Melted Cheddar Cheese, Creole Mayonnaise, Onion, Mushroom Tomato and Bacon. Good food and good service, coupled with an entertaining band that makes us sing along, making it a memorable night for us.

  1. Nice review & pictures.. however I was confused with the word “staycation” in the title. It’s not a staycation unless you’re a local, with a home in Surabaya.
