[NEW SPOT] From Hokkaido, Let’s Taste Tsubohachi Izakaya Jakarta in PIK area

I’m a big fan of Japanese food and was so happy to know there’s another Japanese food restaurant recently opened in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area. Tsubohachi turned out is an Izakaya-style Japanese restaurant originated from Hokkaido, Japan, and this brand is well-known for more than 40 years. In Japan, they already have more than 300 outlets and has several branches outside of Japan, such as in Malaysia, Singapore and now, in Jakarta (Indonesia). I went there exactly five days after the restaurant opened on April 5, 2016, and we were impressed with the enthusiastic crowds that day. People are so curious about this new restaurant in PIK area. Yeah, who doesn’t? Even, the Japanese chef was there preparing sushi for the customer at the sushi bar.

As the first branch in Jakarta, we were quite attracted by their interior design. They also have a spacious dining area which mostly in the form of booth section with wooden furniture, earthy tones and warm lighting that creates an inviting calm atmosphere in the restaurant. From the menu, I understand that Tsubohachi Izakaya Hokkaido offers a variety of traditional and Japanese fusion food ranging from appetisers, main courses, side dishes, Japanese skewers, and desserts. Interesting!

We tried many different meals, and they were all delicious! Our first dish called Unagi Kamameshi (IDR 118K), arrived and served in a stainless steel pot over a flame. It was one of their specialties, but we had to wait for about 10 to 20 minutes for the rice to be slow cooked in the pot. Once ready, we had to stir the rice, which came with a few slices of unagi, mushrooms, and seaweed. The flavored broth in it complement the overall flavor; it tasted delicious and worth the wait! Besides unagi, they also serve Kamameshi with different toppings such as assorted mushroom, salmon, chicken, seafood, and sea urchin.

Sashimi Roppinmori (IDR 300K)

This was the Sashimi RoppinMori (IDR 300K) where assorted sashimi presented in a wooden boat. Oh, how we loved this, generous and thick cuts of fresh sashimi served cold from the sweet prawn, scallops, squid, tuna, salmon, and mussels. Our next course turned out to be another favorite as well. The servings of Tsubohachi Green Salad (IDR 48K) were also generous; all the vegetables tasted fresh and covered with a light Japanese sesame dressing. For something lighter, you can try their Potato Croquette (IDR 38K) nicely coated with panko flour and fried until crisp. The Nabe Beef Sukiyaki (IDR 90K) tasted a bit salty for me, but the Tsubohachi Saikoro Steak (IDR 168K) was wonderful!

If you love to eat fish, you should try Saba Shioyaki (IDR 60K). The grilled mackerel was lightly seasoned with salt, simple yet so delicious! We also enjoyed the Kushi Katsu (various deep-fried skewered meat and vegetable) and beautiful cuts of Salmon Belly, literally just melted in my mouth.

Overall, it was a pleasant lunch experience at Tsubohachi Jakarta. Cozy environment, good food, helpful service, and friendly staff, definitely recommended for Japanese food lovers, especially if you happen to be in the area. A lot of exciting dishes to try, but make sure you try Kamameshi, the Sashimi Roppinmori, Salmon Belly, and don’t forget to end your meals with a sweet note from the Matcha Mochi (IDR 48K) dessert!
