[KULINER SEMARANG] Spiegel, Chic European Bar and Bistro You Need To See

Although we only had a few days in Semarang, we had fun in this city, and I want to share my experience with you. On the first day, we visited Spiegel Bar and Bistro, which is located right across Blenduk Church (one of the historical landmarks of Semarang). Spiegel was established in 1895, and this building is now a restaurant that offers a variety of Italian and Western food where they bring back a European atmosphere in the old town of Semarang. As a historic building, Spiegel has aged over 120 years, but it has its own charisma though it is still classic.

We were impressed with the rustic interior design of this building. Not only spacious, but this restaurant appears to have been maintained well. As you saw from my SnapChat account that day (add my ID: Myfunfoodiary) Spiegel has a relaxed vibe with accompanying tunes that made me spend 3 hours listening to the music, while enjoying the food and relaxing. We went there after we had breakfast at the famous Warung Makan Asem-Asem Koh Liem, the legendary Lekker Paimo, and the popular Tahu Pong Karangsaru. My first intention was to try their coffee that apparently supplied from Morph Coffee in Jakarta. But I can’t resist myself not to try something else from the menu.

So, I decided to order something, such as the Napoli Mussels (IDR 80K), Classic Escargot (IDR 35K), Hot Latte (IDR 30K), and Ice Yuzu (IDR 25K). Surprisingly, the coffee which using Morph coffee beans was good, and presented nicely! You should try it!

If you want something cold and refreshing, I recommend you to try the Ice Yuzu. How simple the Ice Yuzu but it was perfect to beat the hot day in Semarang! It was simply made with a mixture of soda and slices of Japanese yuzu which makes it tastes so refreshing!

I love green mussels, and I must say that the Napoli Mussels was absolutely delicious! My mom in law who actually not a fan of green mussels, happens to love it when she tried them! Yay! It’s all because the mussels were very fresh and served with tasty Napoli sauce and a side of crusty french bread. It’s also served in a big bowl that enough to share with 3-4 persons. Another favorite was the classic Escargot! A delicious blend of garlic and herbs made this escargot so irresistible! And the good thing is, all of the food here is still affordable, similar to cafes and restaurants in Jakarta.

Spiegel Bar and Bistro seems to have it all! Great coffee, decent selection of food, free WIFI, friendly service, and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed our experience there, a cozy place for a cup of coffee, hanging out with friends, spend the afternoon, etc. If you happen to be in Semarang, don’t forget to visit Spiegel Bar and Bistro!
