Street food is something we can’t live without, and we are always looking for this kind of food whenever we travel. Not only when we travel abroad, but in Jakarta itself, and other parts of Indonesia, there are a wide variety of things to eat, especially fast and cheap street food which is popular among the locals. About two weeks ago, I got a chance to be part of Luke Nguyen’s Jakarta Street Food Culinary Trip. Luke Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Australian Chef, and restaurateur, who is also known as the author of various worldwide bestselling and award-winning cookbooks.
There are some of my favorite street foods destination, such as Opor Sunggingan in Kudus, Serabi Notosuman and Bebek Pak Ndut in Solo, Sate Sapi Suruh in Salatiga, and many more available on my blog, which can be a good reference for those of you who like to eat street food when traveling as we do.
So, the first destination of Luke Nguyen’s Culinary Trip is Ketoprak Ciragil and Gado-Gado Ciragil located at Jalan Ciragil II, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Ketoprak is my all time favorite food, and Ketoprak Ciragil is one of the legendary food stalls that existed since 1965! The combination of sweet soy sauce with the goodness of delicious peanut sauce made me enjoy this dish so much! In my opinion, the nutty flavor tasted stronger than the other Ketoprak I’ve ever tasted. You can have it with extra eggs as well. While the Gado-Gado Ciragil tasted more delicious where it’s also known as one of the best street carts that serve a mix of Indonesian salad, served with a thick peanut sauce, savory and spicy as I expected.

Our next destination is Rumah Makan Ampera 2 Tak, which is located in Cikini area, Central Jakarta. We came at lunch time, and this place was very crowded and hot since there is no air conditioning, just like the first two places that we mentioned earlier. It was tough for us to find a seat even though the seating area is spacious than the other two places. Surprisingly, Warung Makan Ampera 2 Tak Khas Sunda open for 24 hours every day and is popular because of its cheap price, and a wide variety of dishes they offer. We can freely choose and get whatever food we wanted, eat first and pay later, can you imagine that? I tried Gulai Kepala Gurame, Peper Jamur, Perkedel Jagung (Corn Fritter), and Beef Floss. The food was just okay, nothing special to me, but you may like their sambal bajak which is special for most people, especially if you like spicy food.
