[HONG KONG] Halal Food Guide Must Try For Muslim Travelers

The food scene in Hong Kong from our last trip in last November 2017 during Winter indeed surprise us! We visited many hidden gems and tried some of the best HALAL food restaurants in Hong Kong and what made us really happy was the food from the HALAL Restaurants in Hong Kong was all so good! I can’t wait to share everything because this is the most requested post by all of you. Here we’ve compiled a guide for the Best 8 Halal Certified Food Restaurant that you should try on your trip to Hong Kong.

Guide to 8 Best Halal Restaurants in Hong Kong for Muslim Travelers

1. Ma’s Restaurant at Cheung Sha Wan Road, Sham Shui Po
Ma’s Restaurant has been around for many years and is popular as a Halal restaurant that provides the best Chinese culinary experience. We tried almost everything on the menu, but of course, restaurant’s specialties like the Veal Goulash, and Lamb Rack both tasted awesome! I found lots of locals eating there at Ma’s Restaurant, and best of all, everything was cooked fresh.

If you come to Ma’s Restaurant during lunch between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm, you can order a Lunch Set for two which is slightly cheaper than the a la carte menu. Make sure to order their signature: Veal Goulash (40 HKD for two pieces = IDR 70K), stuffed with rich and meaty filling inside a crisp and flaky pastry shell, and the Lamb Rack (44 HKD per piece = IDR 75K/piece) was fried to perfection, so crunchy and addictive! Other favorites would be the tasty Curry Mutton (61 HKD = IDR 105K, best eaten with Prata Bread), Deep Fried Prawn (154 HKD = IDR 264K) in balls shape and covered with crispy potatoes and Wasabi Sauce, Dry Sauteed String Beans with Chili Minced Beef (76 HKD = IDR 130K), Sour & Chili Soup (47 HKD = IDR 80K for small size), and Seafood Fried Rice (72 HKD = IDR 123K). All the food was tasty and beyond our expectations. The portion was quite big as well! Ma’s Restaurant is a must visit when you’re in Hong Kong, even if you’re not a Muslim!

2. Kung Woo Beancurd Factory
Another hidden gem for the local and healthy snacks you should try on your trip to Hong Kong is the Kung Woo Beancurd Factory, Hong Kong’s beloved classic dessert, famous by locals for its smooth and silky texture of homemade beancurd, all made from scratch! This small shop sells everything related to soybean, and the location is very close to Sham Shui Po MTR Station. The appearance of this tofu is like our traditional beancurd in Jakarta (we called it as Kembang Tahu in Jakarta, but here they call it as Tofu Hua), available in two versions; hot or cold. In Jakarta, they usually serve it with red sugar syrup and hot ginger, but in Hong Kong, we eat them that way (without red sugar syrup and hot ginger) and by pouring powdered brown sugar on top so that we can adjust the sweetness to our liking. The Tofu Hua was so soft that it melts in your mouth, worth a visit!

3. Islamic Centre Canteen
Never once I thought in my life, we will enter a mosque until we heard that there’s a famous canteen inside the Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre in Hong Kong. Many locals come here, and non-Muslims are welcome too. But since the canteen is located on the 5th floor of the mosque, make sure you dress appropriately if you want to visit this place.

Islamic Centre Canteen serves a wide variety of Cantonese Halal cuisine but very popular for their Dimsum, so we went there to try some dim sum. Guess what? For halal dim sum, we admit that all of the dim sums were so good, and the quality was pretty close to our favorite dim sum restaurant in Jakarta! From Steamed Chicken Fungus (15 HKD, equal to IDR 26K), all Fried Dumplings (starts from 15 HKD), Steamed Beef Balls (17 HKD, equal to IDR 30K), Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (Hakao, 17 HKD equal to IDR 30K), Steamed Butter Egg Cake (13 HKD, equal to IDR 22K), we loved it! Only the Chicken Xiao Long Bao (17 HKD, equal to IDR 30K) that made us disappointed because it wasn’t like the usual Xiao Long Bao; their Xlb was too dry and has no soup inside the skin. Remember that dim sum is available starting at 10 am daily, and the last order is at 2:30 pm. The prices are reasonable, and they use fresh and generous fillings in the dumplings. Highly recommended!

4. Cross Cafe
The western side of HK (Sai Wan area) has now transformed into vibrant hipster hoods, replete with craft beer-swigging, trendy eating, art-loving habitats. We went to Cross Cafe, a new hipster and Instagramable cafe of Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng. Cross Café’s name is about crossing time and space, transporting oneself back to the 50s and 60s in Hong Kong. It also refers to Trappist Dairy’s Chinese name 十字牌, a dairy brand originating from the 1960s which became a local icon and a fond childhood memory for Hong Kongers. The cafe was quite small, but you’ll like the combination of modern and classic Hong Kong elements creates a nostalgic atmosphere, and the eye-catching neon light logo makes this cafe easy to find.

Signature dishes: Chilled Milk Tea, and Macaroni in Tomato Ox-Tail Soup. The portion was quite big, and the ox-tail soup was one of the ultimate comforting dishes with rich tomato broth and tender chunks of oxtail. For snacks or desserts, I personally enjoyed the French Toast with Nutella Hazelnut Spread the most; it was like combo goodness of my favorite toppings. It wasn’t like western french toast, but they deep-fried the bread with egg too, so it gave a nice sweet-savory and crunchy on the outside. Besides the milk tea, their milkshakes and milky coffees tasted pretty good too! If you wanna try a local and modern Cha Chan Teng, give Cross Cafe a go!

5. Tai Cheong Bakery
A trip to Hong Kong will not be complete if you haven’t tried the popular Tai Cheong Bakery 泰昌餅家 which first started at Lyndhurst Terrace, Central Hong Kong in 1954. Our first experience with Tai Cheong Egg Tart was when we’re in Singapore last year when they had a new branch located at Holland Village, Singapore. So, of course, we’re happy to visit the original store in Wanchai (Hong Kong). All the egg tarts are always fresh baked, buttery and crispy with flavorful egg custard, so tender and instantly melts in the mouth. It tasted a bit too sweet for my liking, but it’s creamy and so delicious, one bite is never enough. Although Tai Cheong Bakery is not Halal-Certified; it contains no pork or lard. Do not miss this store while in Hong Kong!

6. Indonesian Restaurant
I never thought that we could easily find so many Indonesian Food in Hong Kong. There are many of them, but one of the favorite restaurants among the locals is Indonesian Restaurant located in Tsim Sha Tsui area. It’s very spacious and comfy, and they have a wide variety of Indonesian food. From Gado-Gado, Sambal Udang Pete, Chicken Satay and Beef Satay, Corn Fritter, Es Cendol, etc., we tried it all. All the food was delicious, but our top favorite was the Chicken and Beef Satay. The satay was surprisingly so good; both of the meat was so thick, juicy, and very authentic, best eaten with their peanut sauce.

7. Warung Malang
This place does not require an introduction because Warung Malang is very popular among the local people, as well as Indonesians living or working in Hong Kong. It is well promoted in the media and anyone who hunts for local halal Indonesian Food will most likely end up here. The dining room is very small, only fit 20 persons maximum, but it doesn’t matter because the food was so good! It’s very authentic for Indonesian food, from Batagor, Egg Balado, Beef Rendang, etc. Even the corn fritters at Warung Malang was so crispy and so delicious than what we tried before in Indonesian Restaurant. I’ll be happy to come back again to Warung Malang. PS: It’s located on the second floor and there’s a sign says “members only” but just ignore this and go in.

8. Bombay Dreams
You can also find a tasty Indian food restaurant in Hong Kong. Before returning to Jakarta, we visited Bombay Dreams, which serves up reliable and delicious traditional Indian food. The place has a good ambiance, certainly nice and romantic with Indian decor and easy listening songs. Be sure to come at lunchtime to sample the buffet, or you can come at night for a la carte. Recommended items and also our personal favorite: Kurkure Khumb (128HKD, bell pepper, and cottage cheese filled button mushrooms, deep fried, and served with tomato chutney), and Tandori Nisha (78HKD per pcs, jumbo prawns marinated in lemon juice, yogurt, freshly ground pan-roasted spices and grilled to perfection).
