Where to Eat Hong Kong – a food and restaurant guide with recommendations to get the best eating experience on your trip including the best dim sum!
There’s no denying the food in Hong Kong is the first thing we all look for when we’re traveling. We had dozens of recommendations from the internet and all my followers on Instagram (thank you guys!), and finally tried a number of them, starting from dim sum and the famous wonton noodles in Hong Kong. After my recent trip to Hong Kong, I received many questions through Direct Messages on Instagram. So, here it is; a quick summary of all our experiences – Hong Kong Food Guide: where and what to eat in Hong Kong – so you can try everything too!
Read on for where and what to eat in Hong Kong and all my favorite restaurants!
1. Bolognese and Fried Egg Angus Burger (HKD$35, equal to IDR 65K)
JUST LAUNCHED IN McDonald’s Hong Kong a few days ago! If you like to watch HK movie, you must be familiar with Nicholas Tse, the super star. We tried one of the new menus; Bolognese and Fried Egg Angus Burger (HKD$35) consisted of tasty and juicy 130gram of thick-cut Angus beef patty served with cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise, generous beef bolognese sauce, and a fried egg, messy ‘coz there’s so much meat inside but it’s so finger lickin’ good!!
2. Chicken Noodle + Pork Chop Bun at Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園)
We came here because I heard that Lan Fong Yuen which opened since 1953 is the pioneer of Hong Kong milk tea, so we decided to try it. Luckily there was no long queue outside when we came there, and there’s a notice for those who wanted to eat inside, that each pax has to have a minimum spending. We ordered a set of Chicken Noodle (HKD$56, equal to IDR 103K) which came with HK style milk tea (also known as “silk stocking tea”), and a Pork Chop Bun (HKD$25, equal to IDR 46K). I chose hot HK style milk tea and we enjoyed it because it has a smooth and creamy texture, strong tea flavor. It was bland at first, so we added some sugar to it. Many people like the noodle and pork chop bun, but we’re not impressed with the food. The noodle was very dry, no soup served on the side, and it seemed they are using instant noodles for this. However, the grilled chicken was yummy!

3. Mango Pancake & Mango Bathtub Pudding at Lucky Dessert
For HK style dessert, we went to Lucky Dessert which is close to where we stayed in Hong Kong. There’s a wide variety of dessert to choose from, especially with mangoes, which remind me of Honeymoon Dessert. We decided to try the most favorite dessert; Mango Pancake HKD$32 (equal to IDR 60K). The cake was soft and stuffed by full cream and mango filling, it was really yummy!! We also tried Mango Bathtub Pudding HKD$58 (equal to IDR 107K) which was served with a small duck on top. Large portions of fresh mango and mango pudding was hidden below the ice; good flavors without just being too sweet, served with generous marshmallows on top! We will definitely come back again next time!

4. Mammy Pancake at Tsim Sha Tsui
We saw this stall full of people who were busy queuing to get the snack! Look, it turned out is Mammy Pancake 媽咪雞蛋仔 at Carnarvon Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, which is listed in the Michelin Guide as a recommended classic street food cooked in a special egg waffle pan, freshly made upon order without food coloring or essences! Yes, they specialize in Hong Kong waffles and we ordered for Sweet Potato (Taro) Egg Waffle HKD$32 (equal to IDR 60K) and loved it since the first bite! The waffle was perfectly crunchy with a round shape on the outside, yet tasted light and soft on the inside, fragrant and not too sweet! The taro was interspersed throughout the waffles, so you can get the purple taro when you bite each waffle sphere. Once you start, you can’t stop!! This place worth visiting when you’re in Hong Kong!

5. Shek Kee Wonton Noodles
A hidden gem for one of the best dumplings and wonton noodles in Hong Kong, this is it, Shek Kee Wonton Noodles which is a favorite among locals! We ordered Wonton Noodle Soup with Pork Dumplings (3 ping pong size of Shrimp Wontons + 2 Pork Dumplings for HKD$45, equal to IDR 83K) and Dry Wonton Noodle with Fish Balls (3 ping pong size of Shrimp Wontons + 3 big size of Fish Balls, for HKD$55, equal to IDR 101K). Springy noodles served with big and delicious wontons stuffed with generous fresh and succulent prawns inside. The portion was quite big, while the soup was tasty and flavorful, we loved it! The fish balls were big as well, bouncy and delicious, definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for authentic wonton noodles when you’re in Hong Kong!
PS: Don’t worry, the English menu is available on the table and on the wall in front of the door (see my picture below for reference).

6. Tsim Chai Kee Wonton Noddles (沾仔记)
Because we’re curious, we decided to try other best wonton noodles as listed in the Michelin Guide, which is Tsim Chai Kee Wonton Noodles at Wellington Street Central, Hong Kong. Tsim Chai Kee 沾仔记 has earned its due by being categorized as “Bib Gourmand”, which translates in Michelin language as “inspector’s favorite for good value”. This place was crowded when we come for dinner so we had to share a table with the others. Here, they only serve noodles with soup and there are three different toppings to choose from; shrimp wonton, beef slices, or/and fish balls. We ordered noodles with two toppings and chose Shrimp Wonton and Sliced Beef for the toppings that cost HKD$37 (equal to IDR 68K for 2 ping pong size of Shrimp Wontons + Sliced Beef) and King Prawn Wonton Noodle for HKD$31 (equal to IDR 57K for 3 big size of Shrimp Wontons). By looking at the price, I must say that it’s cheaper here than when we ate lunch at Shek Kee Wonton Noodle. As they say, the shrimp wontons were also big like golf balls size, but the portion was slightly smaller, and the soup was not as tasty as Shek Kee Wonton Noodle for our liking. We enjoyed the sliced beef so much; thanks to its soft, and tender texture. Overall, this place is worth visiting when you are in Hong Kong.

7. More Eggetes
Around Tsuen Wan, there’s a snack counter that sells taro egg waffle with honey star cereal at More Eggetes. Unfortunately, it was no longer available when we got there, so we decided to try the Orange Chocolate for HKD$26 (equal to IDR 48K). It’s made fresh upon order, served piping hot, so that we can smell the aromatic custard taste especially the orange flavor, and gooey center filled with chocolate chips and adorable-looking honey star cereal. The edge easily fall apart and was not as crunchy as we’ve tried at Mammy Pancake, but it’s still yummy tho’ as long as we eat it straight away! But, seriously.. Who can resist the innovation of this gorgeous egg waffle anyway? This is a good option if you’re looking for a yummy afternoon snack when you’re in Hong Kong.

8. Dim Sum Square
I grew up with the tradition of having dim sum in my family, so of course, Dim Sum is a must when we’re in Hong Kong. Dim Sum Square is located in a strategic area in Central Hong Kong, and this place is listed as one of the best dim sum restaurants at affordable prices in Hong Kong. If you can’t speak or read Chinese there’s no need to worry! They have a menu in English and all you need to do is write the amount you want of each dish. We had Chicken and Chinese Mushroom in Beancurd wrap HKD$26 (equal to IDR 48K), Beef Meat Balls with beancurd HKD$20 (equal to IDR 37K), and Crispy BBQ Pork Buns HKD$20 (equal to IDR 37K). Everything was delicious! Besides their dim sum, we also tried one of their signature dishes, the Rice Steamer Pot HKD$31 (equal to IDR 57K). It was tasty as well (it’s like nasi Tim in Jakarta) but served with some dim sum topping on top. We chose for the Chicken Feet and Steamed Pork ribs topping, recommended.

9. Ma Sa Restaurant
If you want to eat like a local, then you can’t miss this place! Located in the heart of Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, there’s an old-school cha chaan teng which is famous for their popular three sunny-side-up eggs on rice with char siu for only HK$32. This restaurant has been operating for over 10+ years as a go-to place for local workers and residence of Sheung Wan, so expect long queues if you come during lunchtime. Sadly we arrived very late around 4.30pm, the menu was not sold anymore at that time, so we chose the Four Fried Chicken Wings HKD$25 (equal to IDR 46K) and Egg & Luncheon Sandwich HKD$24 (equal to IDR 44K) from the Afternoon Tea Sets on the menu. The chicken wings were tasted like chicken wings from the frozen version that we used to eat in Jakarta but the Egg & Luncheon Sandwich was so good even though it’s very simple to make. Each set comes with drink so we ordered Hot Hong Kong Milk Tea and Hot Lemon Tea. Definitely the place for simple delicious fare!

10. The Alley
Whether you’re a fan of bubble tea or not, you should definitely try this! The Alley is Hongkong’s latest Taiwanese bubble tea trend that makes people want to queue even for hours under the heat and humidity of summer. We went to the 1st outlet that opened a year ago at Tsim Sha Tsui and was looking for the Aurora Series but sadly it’s sold out and no longer available. So I decided to try the limited edition – Brown Sugar Deerioca (HKD$28, equal to IDR 52K) and it’s worth the wait (I waited for 30 minutes to get my drink, yes..!) The deerioca (boba pearls) at the bottom were served warm, tasted sweet and the syrup has a creamy taste, while the fresh milk was served cold on top. Surprisingly, the bubbles were very good in terms of the chewy texture with brown sugar taste in every mouthful. It wasn’t overly sweet, overall, I highly recommend this.

11. Cafe de Coral
We have no idea that Cafe de Coral is apparently Hong Kong’s largest, most successful Chinese fast-food chain which is established in 1968. We’re worried that food is expensive considering the ambiance and decoration are so nice in many of the branches we passed in Hong Kong. Finally, we decided to have lunch at Cafe de Coral at HKIA (Hong Kong International Airport) and really enjoyed it! They have a variety of good deals for lunch starts from HKD$45 which include with tea/coffee, and the menu is available in English and Chinese. Because it’s fast food, so we ordered at the cashier and waited there to pick up our order. We ordered Roasted Goose and Hainan Chicken set for HKD$83 (equal to IDR 154K) served with vegetables, and Shrimp Wonton Noodles set for HKD$45 (equal to IDR 83K). Great portion of rice set with tasty meat and its garlic dipping sauce, while the noodles were springy enough with delicious shrimp wonton, what a tempting combination, we loved it! Clean, well-organized, and delicious food, worth going if you want a quick casual meal in a pleasant environment while you are in Hong Kong!

12. Arome Bakery
It’s hard not to love this bakery in Hong Kong! Arome Bakery has many branches and they specialize in various types of bread and cakes, especially with mango, chocolate, cheese and fruits. We were tempted to try one of the counters: the Strawberry Pie is very pretty, comes with great fresh strawberries, and has a good taste too without being too sweet overall.
