We’ve just done a little culinary trip at AEON Mall BSD City a few days ago with my family. As the largest shopping centre in Japan, AEON Mall, which now present in BSD City, Tangerang, came up with a one-stop service concept. There are many Japanese stores opened in the mall, and, I was very pleased to know that there are many Japanese restaurants in the mall that can satisfy visitors. I believe they want to give a new culinary experience through AEON Market, Ramen Village, Food Culture, Food Carnival and Cafe Street that’s available in the mall. Not surprisingly, the traffic to this mall is massive and apparently this mall has become a food haven for all foodies in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

We begin our culinary trip from the cheapest sushi station in the AEON Market, Taste Better Durian Puff, and explored some snacks ranging from Gyoza, Yakitori, Karaage and Takoyaki in the Food Culture, AEON Mall. We also had lunch at the Sukiya Japanese Restaurant, which located at the Food Carnival on the 3rd floor of AEON Mall, but I’ll share about Sukiya in a separate post. We fell in love with Sukiya Japanese Restaurant the moment we had dinner in Sukiya Tokyo – Japan last July 2014. Click here if you want to know more about Sukiya Japan.

Sushi and Bento counter inside the AEON Market, Ground Floor

We’ve passed this Sushi & Bento counter several times, but we don’t have a chance to buy any because the queue was too long and the queue line was closed already.

This time I came early so the queue was not too long. The average time to queue is about 20 minutes while I was there.

Some fresh sashimi and sushi sets are also sold cheaper than other sushi places I have ever met. For soy sauce, chopsticks and wasabi, all sold separately. One person can only buy a maximum of 20 pieces of sushi and we bought many sushi, sashimi and sushi set as well. Are you ready to hunt sushi at AEON Mall?

Gogo Dimsum, Ground Floor AEON Market

We also tried some homemade dimsum by Gogo Dimsum. We loved all the flavors; chicken, shrimp, etc., and especially the GIANT steamed bun filled with Sweet Bean Paste (Tausa Pao), all of them were yummy!!

Taste Better, Ground Floor (a few blocks away - in front of AEON Market)

Taste Better is a brand from Malaysia, and already has many branches in Singapore, China, and now opened in Indonesia. We bought a box containing mix puffs, a combination of 3 pieces of Durian Puff and 3 pieces of Soursop Puff, but the Durian Puff won it all. Durian Puff from Taste Better tasted so good!! One bite of delicious custard puffs stuffed with creamy and smooth fresh durian paste. We loved it!

Unlike many other food courts, The Food Culture consists of 21 restaurants serving a wide variety of Japanese and Western Cuisine within a modern Japanese atmosphere.

Takoyaki is a popular snack in Japan, which contains octopus meat on the inside. When compared with other takoyaki places in Jakarta, Yamatoya Takoyaki much better and it was so delicious; just like what we’ve eaten in Japan. This Takoyaki had a crunchy texture on the outside, but still soft on the inside. They also added a sprinkling of seaweed powder and katsuobushi (dried shaved bonito) throughout takoyaki that makes it even more delicious. There are several choices of sauce, and we ordered with the Japanese sauce and Spicy Mayonnaise. A must try!

Toyofuku Gyoza, inside the Food Culture

Not far from the Yamatoya Takoyaki counter, we moved to Toyofuku. I read from their brochure; Toyofuku is a famous restaurant in Asakusa area, Tokyo, Japan, and this is the first branch in Indonesia. Toyofuku offers Gyoza (Japanese dumplings) as their specialty menu, and they use Tetsunabe, a special tool from Japan to prepare each Gyoza dish. It was too crowded and we had to wait for 40-45 minutes. Sigh…

Although the menu is not limited to Gyoza, there are fried Udon, and some other menus, we only ordered 12 pieces of Gyoza which is cheaper rather than if we ordered a set of 3 Gyoza or a set of 5 Gyoza. They only provide Chicken Gyoza (No PORK)!! Unlike in many other places that we’ve tried, this gyoza stuffed with minced chicken, vegetables and curry seasonings. No wonder it had the curry flavor in it, and it was pretty good. I hope they can offer Pork Gyoza as well.

The Hakata Ichibandori Express also brought from Japan and this is their first branch in Indonesia. They offer several signature dishes, such as Yakitori, Sumibiyaki, Bento and some side dish. We’re tempted to try Kushimori (combo of 5 pieces chicken skewers) and Tebakara (chicken wings). The Kushimori consisted of a combination of quail eggs beefroll, Okura beefroll, chicken meatball, chicken skin, and chicken skewers. Tebakara was also delicious! 5 pieces of Japanese-style fried chicken wings served with sesame seeds and sauce on the bottom. They were all delicious, but, unfortunately, the slow service made us have to wait for 40-45 minutes to get our order completed.

Kin No Tori Kara - Karaage, in front of the Food Culture

Kin No Tori Kara is also a famous karaage chain originated from Japan. Their first location opened in Tokyo, Japan and always crowded with young adults who loves chicken karaage. What makes them unique is the 12 condiments or toppings that are available and we can mix all the topping based on our preferences.

"Kin

We tried to mix the BBQ sauce with mayonnaise sauce and Japanese Chili Powder as recommended by the waiter and we loved it! The chicken karaage was really tender but a bit greasy for my personal liking. Overall, it was a pretty good snack.
