Savory Fish Cake is one of my all-time favorite Indonesian dishes, and in Jakarta, we all refer to it as Pempek. If you’re a foodie like me, you may also notice that quietly and slowly a pempek revolution has been showing up, from the black charcoal pempek, salmon pempek, etc. So recently we went to Pempek Belida Mas International, located in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. Nothing much about the ambiance which I can tell because the place is just a small restaurant like any other, but they serve good food, good service, and good prices.

This place has been opened a couple of months, and their menu features Pempek as their signature dish and some noodle. We can find the simplest pempek, all the classic pempek such as Pempek Kapal Selam, Pempek Keriting, Pempek Kulit, Pempek Lenjer, etc. Yet, I was tempted to try their specialities, the Salted Egg Pempek and Mozzarella Pempek.

In addition to the savoury fishcake (Pempek), we also tried the chicken noodle (Bakmi Ayam) which served with meatballs and boiled dumpling, topped with diced chicken meat. It looked like a classic old-fashioned chicken noodle, but this noodle instantly becomes one of our favorite noodles in Jakarta. The noodle and chicken were well-seasoned, simple yet delicious!

If you’re not familiar or perhaps confused about what is Pempek, I will share a bit information about it. Pempek is known as Palembang dish that is made from a mixture of boneless ground fish meat and tapioca, deep-fried, and usually served with yellow noodles, along with a dark sweet and sour sauce called cuka (vinegar sauce). Most people use mackerel to make Pempek, but here in Pempek BMI, they only use Belida fish as the name suggests. We tried the Salted Egg version (IDR 26K) which is wrapped in the pempek dough, and it was so good, tastier than the original version with a chicken egg inside! But of course, it depends on your personal preference, if you like salted egg, you might like it as me.

It’s best to eat the Pempek when it’s still warm and crisp on the outside. For the vinegar sauce itself, I opted-in for a mild vinegar sauce version, rather than the thicker sauce. I liked the balance of sweet, sour, and spicy flavor of the sauce, although it wasn’t too spicy for me. Some people may like it spicier, but it was enough for me. And if you are a cheese lover, you have to try the Pempek Mozzarella (IDR 24K). The mozzarella which tucked inside each pempek creates a new twist to an old favorite! They don’t look fancy, but all ages will dig into this!

It was kinda hard to stop at just one bite of Pempek Mozzarella. So, overall, we enjoyed everything here. If you happen to be in Kemayoran area, or craving for a good taste of Pempek, try their unique Salted Egg Pempek and Mozzarella Pempek. They’re also available for delivery orders by GoJek.
