Gosh! I was glad to hear that PappaRich, a well-recognized Malaysian delight which was established in Kuala Lumpur since 2006, has opened its branch in Jakarta, yay! Indonesia marks the brand’s 11th country with more than 130 outlets in the growing milestones of PappaRich, which include Australia, China, Singapore, USA, South Korea, Brunei, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. We were about to try this restaurant when we were in Malaysia a few months ago but apparently the restaurant was not yet ready to open.

Located in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta, PappaRich PIK just opened its door to the public for a few days (on Thursday, July 14, 2016), and they have received a numerous of enthusiastic guests lined up to try their food. I can say that PappaRich has brought Kopitiam old style to the next level. Here, the restaurant features an elegant post-British colonial decor and traditional furnishing that make diners feel like home and transport to the memory lane. Not only the vintage decorative (the Nyonya-tile entrance, wall mounted clocks, vintage ceiling fans, arched windows), but the dark wooden panels, stone walls, and a touch of marble in their dining table provides a classy atmosphere to the whole ambiance.

PappaRich offers an extensive range of Malaysian style noodle and rice dishes, including a variety of traditional desserts as well. Their dishes somewhat have some influences from Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines, yet the taste has been slightly adapted to suit the local palettes. Yesterday we tried some of their signature dishes, such as the Chicken Curry Laksa (IDR 48K), Penang Assam Laksa (IDR 43K), Musang King Cheesecake (IDR 35K), and 3 Layer Tea (IDR 30K). Not to forget, the Roti Bom (IDR 23K) and Ribena Melon Ice Blended (IDR 42K) which was also recommended by them.

If you like the combination of sweet and sour taste, the Penang Assam Laksa will surely satisfy your taste buds. It’s a fish-based laksa, served with thick rice noodles in aromatic fish-based tamarind broth along with shredded pineapple, lettuce, mackerel, etc in the soup. If compared to Penang Assam Laksa, the Chicken Curry Laksa instantly became a favorite to suit my personal preference. Papparich’s homemade curry laksa was prepared carefully with at least 15 different herbs and spices. No wonder the Curry Laksa was touted as “The World’s 7th Culinary Wonder” by the Huffington Post, since they are using only quality ingredients from their respective places of origin, for instance – premium curry powder, quality pepper from native Sarawak, flavorsome coconut sugar from Malacca, and other choices ingredients. The curry laksa was so delicious, rich, and flavorful if compared to other curry laksa out there. It was thick and mildly spicy with a hint of coconut fragrance. It is a bowl of goodness that I will look for more at PappaRich!

I like Roti Canai and always look for it whenever I come to a Malaysian food restaurant. Here we tried something different, called PappaRich’s Roti Bom which was simply delicious. The texture is somewhat thicker and sweeter than the regular Roti Canai and served with sugar and curry broth on the side. Oh well, you know what? Besides the main ingredients, they also air-flown the famous Musang King (Durian) Cheesecake from Malaysia to PappaRich Jakarta. The Musang King Cheesecake air-flown exclusively for PappaRich from the fine patisserie of Pastry Chef of the Year 2001 and World Pastry Cup gold medalist, Chef Daniel Tay. It’s something unique, moist, light and sweet; a perfect way to end a meal in PappaRich.

Instead of ordering the same Teh Tarik (Milk Tea), we tried 3 Layer Tea which tasted so good because it has the Malacca palm sugar, mixed with a layer of evaporated milk and a layer of red tea on top. It was less sweet and so refreshing. Ribena Melon Ice Blended also nice to cool off the day. Overall, it was a great lunch experience in PappaRich PIK, Jakarta. If you’re craving for a plate of Penang Char Kuey Teow, Hainan Chicken Rice, Briyani Rice, Chicken Curry Laksa, Penang Prawn Noodles, Nasi Lemak, Kaya Toasts, Pappa White Coffee, etc., you should stop by to PappaRich PIK, Jakarta. The comfortable, spacious restaurant setting, friendly service, reasonable prices for lots of authentic Malaysian delights, we will definitely return again to PappaRich.
