The reason why I suggest you visit Jia Jia Tang Bao‘s outlet on Huang He road is that Yang’s Dumpling, the famous fried-style Xiao Long Bao in Shanghai, is located just across the street. Hooray! Yes, now you get it! If you know Kuo Tieh or maybe have eaten it, then this Xiao Long Bao may not be weird for you. People usually refer to this food as Sheng Jian Bao 生煎包 (the pan-fried version of xiao long bao). Not only my friends but lots of you, dearest followers on my Instagram, recommend me Yang’s Dumpling 小杨生煎 as the must-have Sheng Jian Bao when in Shanghai.

I will share with you the video from this visit. From what you can see in the picture below, customers able to see their cooking methods through the window. The Sheng Jian Bao is pan-fried on a large cast iron pan until the bottom turns crispy brown, but the top part remains fluffy. That’s how people in Shanghai love it! Remember that the ordering system here is self-service, so when you come to Yang’s Dumpling, you have to place your order at the cashier, pay first, and give the order paper to the kitchen staff, then they will prepare and deliver it to your table.

The crisp skin texture, slightly thicker than Jia Jia Tang Bao‘s skin, but still a good skin, made these Xiao Long Bao tasted a bit like Kuo Tieh that we used to eat in Jakarta. The dumplings are also filled with hot soup, available in three different fillings, with crispy skin that will make you crave for more. I’ve tried all of three, and our top favorite was the Shrimp Dumplings, followed by the original Yang’s Dumpling (pork meat). The black dumplings which stuffed with Rattan Pepper Fish may look attractive, but we did not like it much.

The broth tasted good, and we fell in love with the delights of fried Xiao Long Bao made by Yang’s Dumpling. We finally came back again and ordered two portions of Shrimp Dumplings before returning to Jakarta. Good news is, besides the prices are not expensive, Yang’s Dumpling also has multiple locations throughout Shanghai, so it’s easy for you to find them. If you want to taste the best of Shanghai food, make sure to visit Yang’s Dumpling.
