[NEW SPOT] Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh Singapore Since 1973 Now Open in Jakarta

After almost one year, finally I come back again to Mall Taman Anggrek, and we spotted a new restaurant named Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh, which just opened last month. At first, we want to eat in the other restaurant, but my husband saw the red ribbon in front of this restaurant which attracts him to see closer. Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh is originally from Singapore since 1973, and because it’s new for us, we changed our mind and decided to have dinner at Ya Hua. If Mall Taman Anggrek is your playground, you will soon realize that Honeymoon Dessert is no longer exists on the 4th floor and is now replaced by Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh.

The restaurant was full when we arrived at 19:00, and there are only two empty tables left. Other customers have taken another table, so we can just sit at a round table located on the front side of the restaurant. It was less crowded after we finished our dinner so that we can take a picture of the ambiance.

I put a big expectation when I sit down and look at their menu. It is similar to the other Bak Kut Teh brand which first opened in the PIK area (So**F* Bak Kut Teh) that is also a Singapore brand. Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh apparently also one of the famous Bak Kut Teh in Singapore. We’re so curious to try their menus. We ordered the Prime Cut Ribs, which is their signature dish, Sliced Pork Soup, You Tiao (Cakwe), and Tao Pok. But then, the waiter came back and told us that the prime cut ribs wasn’t ready at that time, and if we still want it, we have to wait at least 1 hour. Because it’s a signature dish, and we were not too hungry, we said “ok, we’ll wait!”.

You Tiao, IDR 10K

A small portions of You Tiao (in Bahasa, we called it as Cakwe) to accompany the main dish. I usually dip the Cakwe with the Bak Kut Teh soup while eating, but You Tiao here a bit thick and soggy dough texture compared to the one at So**Fa Bak Kut Teh.

Prime Cut Ribs, IDR 79.5K

I could smell a strong peppery aroma of the soup when it’s served on the table. It’s a super spicy peppery soup base, and they use black pepper, no wonder it was too spicy for us. The soup came with a light brown soup, similar with So**Fa Bak Kut Teh, but too much black pepper in the soup. It wasn’t easy to bite it off the bone. The ribs were small, somewhat hard, and not as tender as what we usually eat.

Sliced Pork Soup, IDR 59.5K

A bowl of sliced pork with vegetables on the underneath to make the meat look full when served. There were ten slices of pork, which is tender and nicer than the pork ribs above. We thought that probably the pork ribs weren’t ready at that time and had to be cooked a little longer than it should.

Tao Pok, IDR 23.5K

A bit disappointed with the presentation because it’s quite different from the picture on the menu. It was just like a traditional fried tofu, which we called as Tahu Sumedang in Bahasa, braised and served with soy sauce.

I want to know what it’s like in Singapore. They already have two outlets in Singapore; located on the Haverlock Road in Isetan Office Building, and on Keppel Road at Tanjung Pagar Complex. While in Jakarta, in addition to this branch in Mall Taman Anggrek, there’s another branch located in Bay Walk Mall, Pluit. Overall, we enjoyed the sliced pork soup, but nothing special with the rest. I guess we were not lucky that night. The price is also a bit higher than my favorite Bak Kut Teh Restaurant so far, for example; two pieces of succulent pork ribs cost you IDR 68K before tax at So**Fa vs two pieces of pork ribs cost you IDR 79.5K before tax at Ya Hua.

  1. Just my two cents of opinion, Bak Kut Teh semestinya tidak ditambah dg bawang goreng 🙁 jadi tidak original, pas sy tanyain ke waiternya “apakah ini sama dg yg di singapore?” jawabnya “mmm kurang tau” :/
    Dan memang lebih enakan song…
