[NEW SPOT] From Singapore, NamNam Noodle Bar Now Open in Jakarta

Good news! Did you know that NamNam Noodle Bar of Singapore finally opened in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta? NamNam Noodle Bar, which was formed in 2011 by the director and owner Chef Nam Quoc Nguyen, is a new Vietnamese eatery in Jakarta, and I’ve heard that the queue is ridiculous long in Singapore. Oh, by the way.. Name of the restaurant “NamNam” itself means “delicious or yummy”, said Chef Nam at the Grand Opening that I attended last week. It makes me even more curious about their food.

You can easily spot NamNam Noodle Bar from the outside because the signboard is pretty big and eye-catching for everyone to see. The large windows provide natural light coming in to the restaurant during daytime and people can easily see the eclectic interiors of the restaurant from the outside. Vibrant red and yellow colors of the hanging wall make the ambiance feel warm and comfortable for diners. They also create a setting that brings customers to the lively streets of Vietnam, with a “street cinema” that was adapted from the Singapore branch as well.

Chef Nam came up with an idea to repackage old-world Vietnamese street food with a modern twist. All recipes at NamNam are prepared without using MSG (Monosodium Glutamate, which is commonly used to enhance the overall flavor of food). That’s why on each table, there are several Vietnamese sauces provided where customers can add sauces to their noodle soups based on their preferences.

Sugarcane, IDR 20K - Fresh Young Coconut, IDR 40K

Did you know that freshly pressed sugar cane, as healthy just like other freshly pressed juice? Aside from the good fact, I chose this drink because NamNam Noodle Bar serves this juice with kaffir lime leaves as well. The young coconut was our favorite too! Although the meat of the young white coconut was not thick, but it tasted fresh, contains sweet coconuts and refreshing water.

NamNam Noodle Bar specializes in Vietnamese Pho and in addition to that; they also serve a variety of Vietnamese snacks and desserts. For starters, we’ve tried a few snacks, and they all tasted delicious, especially the Crispy Fried Prawn and Chicken Rolls, our favorite. The Shrimp Sugarcane and Fried Prawn Chicken Rolls, best eaten with the sweet garlic and chili dipping sauce served on the side.

Coconut-Shrimp Paste Sugarcane Skewer, IDR 35K

Smooth texture of shrimp meat and the way they use sugar cane as skewer is a great idea. There’s a sweet aftertaste when chewing the sugar cane. Simply delicious!

Crispy Fried Prawn and Chicken Rolls, IDR 35K

These Crispy Fried Prawn and Chicken Rolls reminded me of Lumpia (Spring Rolls), my favorite traditional snack in Jakarta. These fried rolls stuffed with minced chicken and prawn deep-fried until golden brown. Crunchy and delicious!

Fresh Southern Vietnamese Shrimp Rolls, IDR 28K

Fresh Southern Rolls is also a traditional dish in Vietnam. This fresh Vietnamese shrimp spring roll or often called as salad rolls (Goi Cuon); consist of cooked rice vermicelli noodles, cooked medium-sized shrimp, fresh herbs, egg, and rice wrappers. I liked them, especially when eaten with their homemade peanut sauce.

So, here comes the main dishes. We can choose 12 pholicious bowls of Vietnamese noodles including the famous Pho with beef or chicken stock and the French-inspired savory baguettes also known as Banh Mi.

Pho Wagyu Beef Slices, IDR 130K

Among the 12 variants of Pho, we tried the Pho Wagyu Beef Slices, which had a good broth and thinly sliced Wagyu Beef landed on top the rice noodles. The soup was comforting, and the meat was very tender, but I also added a bit of fish sauce to enhance the flavor of the soup base. Simple yet delicious! NamNam also provides additional toppings such as extra Wagyu beef slices, extra soft boiled egg, extra bean sprouts, etc. Of course, with additional charge too.

Pho Beef Balls, IDR 58K

Besides the famous Pho Wagyu Beef Slices, you might want to try their Pho Beef Balls. All beef balls made by Chef Nam. These beef balls were so good, and it tasted similar to our favorite meatball place in Jakarta if you know what I mean.

So from my overall experience, the way they used fresh ingredients, no MSG to all Vietnamese dishes that comes at an affordable price (ranging from IDR 39K for Banh Mi, from IDR 58K for Hanoi Pho, from 28K for appetizers and desserts), I would come back again. In addition, the staff is helpful and provide quick service. The vibrant evening ambiance, and not too dark, creates a lovely and warm atmosphere for everyone to eat. If you’re in Jakarta, don’t forget to give NamNam Noodle Bar a try!
