[NEW] Hennessy Cognac and Chinese Food Pairing at House of Yuen

I personally think Cognac is no longer just for a party or to celebrate special occasions anymore, because nowadays, stronger liquors such as Hennessy’s cognac have increased and become a trend lately, especially for the millennials. This trend is consistent with Asia, where now Cognac is usually enjoyed with food; before eating or even during the meal. So, just recently, we had an amazing lunch at House of Yuen, a Michelin star restaurant by Sun Tung Lok Hong Kong located in Fairmont Jakarta to sample the special 6-course Hennessy Set Menu which also comes with a cognac pairing for each course; Hennessy V.S.O.P and Hennessy X.O.

I’m excited to share this experience with you because this was our very first experience to eat Cantonese dishes paired with cognac because as you know, Chinese cuisine is quite complex, but apparently, the powerful flavor and aroma of Hennessy V.S.O.P and Hennessy X.O went well with each course. It tasted like a harmony, yeah… I’m surprised too. I find myself drinking it – almost like drinking water during the meal, ha-ha… It was really an exciting lunch experience, the idea of pairing this food with Hennessy cognac is brilliant!

We started with 3 appetizers; Roasted barbecued US single rib pork belly served with goose liver, Deep-fried Prawns with majiko sauce served with beetroot, Wok-fried Hokkaido scallop served with XO and marmite sauce. Everything is served in a bite-size portion, and very, very tasty, especially the scallop which is served with generous black caviar on top, paired with Hennessy V.S.O.P. Oh my gosh!

The next course was a delicious combination of Fish Maw and Crab Meat in a hearty golden supreme broth. The Hennessy X.O gave a different taste sensation when we drink it while enjoying the creamy soup.

Who can resist this? Mouth-watering, fat and juicy Oven baked tiger-prawns combined with the melting cheese and spicy XO sauce! And when it paired with Hennessy V.S.O.P, it really goes well to the tiger prawn, which also enhances the taste and flavor of the cognac. We loved it!

For the main course, we enjoyed the Pan-fried Australian Wagyu Sirloin accompanied by truffle tapenade, followed by Braised whole Australia fresh green lips abalone and shitake mushrooms served with vegetable. Again, both dishes were very flavorful! The Australian Wagyu Sirloin was cooked well, and the sauce was so tasty! We’re huge fans of abalone, and they served a the huge size of abalone and shitake mushrooms, it made the dish a luxury real treat, especially when they paired with Hennessy X.O!

Last but not least, the dessert, which is also paired with Hennessy V.S.O.P again! Chilled cream of mango with sago pearls and pomelo, accompanied by Deep-fried glutinous ball stuffed with salted egg custard, again it was really delicious!

It’s hard not to love all the food at House of Yuen because the entire meal was absolutely mouthwatering, very tasty and well presented! These dishes gave us the opportunity to explore various flavors of food that interacted with Hennessy Cognac. Not to mention, impeccable service, lovely surroundings and easy-listening music playing in the background, creating another memorable experience at House of Yuen, Fairmont Jakarta!
