7 Michelin Street Foods Must Eat in Bangkok

– Bangkok Food Guide – 7 Must Eat Michelin-starred Street FoodS –

Where to eat in Bangkok? This comes to my mind again, haha… As we’ve been to Bangkok many times, we wanna go and try something different on this trip. That’s why we decided to visit some Michelin-starred street food that is famous in Bangkok, Thailand. A lot of questions came into my Direct Message via my Instagram page related to all the places that we went to last February 2020. So, if you’re also curious about the 1 Michelin Star Bangkok Street Hawker (Raan Jay Fai), Bangkok’s Best Fried Chicken, the best Tom Yum Mama noodles at Jeh O Chula, and some others in Bangkok, keep reading. I hope this can be a useful reference for you, don’t forget to share this article with your family and friends.

1. Sornthong Pochana Restaurant

If you’re in Bangkok (Thailand) and looking for quality, pocket-friendly seafood, Sornthong Pochana is worth trying. This family-run restaurant has been in business for more than 20 years. No wonder if this restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide Thailand because they’ve maintained their reputation ever since. It’s a bit difficult to find a parking space because the restaurant is on the side of the road. Still, we can find it by looking at the busy crowd under the large yellow signboard in Thai and Chinese languages.

Sornthong Pochana offers a wide variety of Thai-Chinese style seafood and using only fresh ingredients for every customer. We can’t resist their signature Fried Crab with Curry and Egg, it was so delicious! The crab was so big, sweet, fresh, and perfectly cooked, served with a generous amount of shred eggs and curry sauce, but it will be better if it can be a bit spicier. A must try!

Another favorite is their Pork Satay, which is served with peanut sauce. The satay came in large size too, and it tasted more like Penang style satay. Do not miss their buttery Fried Scallop served with generous fried garlic. If you like an oyster, we recommend you to order Fried Oyster with Omelette. The oyster was fresh, not smelly at all, served with generous bean sprouts, and smooth eggs on a hot plate. Last but not least, you gotta try their Mango Sticky Rice for desserts. Same like the main courses, they served generous sticky rice and fresh mangoes, it’s so good!

Overall, this is one of the best seafood I’ve ever tasted in Bangkok, and all the flavors are balanced. The price is not too cheap, but the quality is there. Tips: don’t come late as you might have to wait for a table if you arrive after 7:00 pm!

2. Tom Yum MAMA at Jeh O Chula

Famed for its unique twist on Tom Yum soup, we decided to visit the famous Jeh O Chula in Bangkok, Thailand. Located close to Chulalongkorn University and the National Stadium BTS Station, Jeh O Chula offers a variety of classic Thai dishes with a slightly unique twist on its cuisine. However, at night, people queue to buy their Tom Yum noodles, which seem to be made with instant Mama noodles. Wow! Prices for a portion of basic tom yum noodles start at 120 Baht, but we ordered their signature dish: Mama Oho with full toppings (250 Baht). I think the price is quite reasonable, because the meal came in a large bowl, and can be shared for 2 hungry people.

I must say, I was impressed by their generous serving; we got succulent prawns, squid, pork meatballs, eggs, and crispy pork. Besides, the taste of the tom yum soup itself was impressive! It wasn’t spicy and not too sour, unlike many places serving Thai Tom Yum. At Jeh O Chula, the soup was creamy but not too thick, comes in bright orange color, and served with generous Thai herbs like lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, red chili, and cilantro slices. Very aromatic!

Other favorites are the Stir-fried Baby Clams with roasted chili paste (100Baht, equal to IDR 48K), and Crispy Pork (100 Baht for a small portion, equal to IDR 48K). The crispiness level is still not as crispy as what we’ve tried at the legendary crispy pork vendor, “Mr. Jo.” The pork was tender, but not too crispy when we tried it; however, it’s a satisfying dish.

Note:

– While Jeh O opens its doors at 5 pm, MAMA OHO is only available after 11 pm. The queue can stretch for up to 90 minutes in the evening, so if you want to drop by for supper, I suggest you arrive early before 11 pm! But, if you’d like to try their soup before that, it is still available without the noodles and crispy pork (comes in a regular bowl, not for sharing).

– This restaurant is quite close to Siam Paragon. You can hop on a tuk-tuk and ask them to drop you off at Jeh O Chula (only 5-minutes ride from the Siam BTS station, depending on the traffic).

3. Gai Thod – Polo Fried Chicken

If we talk about Thai cuisines, we don’t think about fried chicken. But, there’s this legendary place for famous fried Chicken in Bangkok, Soi Polo Fried Chicken ไก่ทอดเจ๊กี (โปโล), must try in Bangkok!! What makes this fried chicken so famous, and is featured in the Michelin Guide Thailand 2018, 2019, and 2020. Although the title is the same as fried chicken, its texture and tenderness are different. This chicken is not greasy, succulent yet slightly crispy on the skin exterior, and juicy. Even the chicken breast pieces weren’t dry at all; everything tasted delicious. The deep-fried crispy garlic, which is sprinkled on top, is the best part of this chicken! We paired it with Som tam (ส้มตำ, green papaya salad) and eat them with sticky rice, just like how the locals enjoy it. After finished eating, we ended up ordered one whole chicken again to take back to Jakarta. Yay!

How to get there:
From Wireless Road, turn onto Sanam Khli (a small soi), and you cannot miss the big red “Polo Fried Chicken” sign waiting for you on the left-hand side of the road. Taxi is probably the easiest way to get there. Otherwise, it’s about a 15-minute walk from either Ploen Chit or Ratchadamri BTS stations.

4. Jay Fai Crab Omelette

Ever imagined that a street food stall could get one Michelin star? If not, then you should visit the famous Crab Omelette by Jay Fai in Bangkok, Thailand. This eatery is run by Raan Jay Fai, a 70-plus-year-old lady also called “Sister Mole”, who is known for her iconic over-sized goggles. FYI, Jay Fai is the only street hawker awarded the Michelin Star in the Bangkok Michelin Guide and also featured in the Netflix’s new series “Street Food” – produced from the creators of Chef’s Table. Wow! Before you visit this place, you can make a reservation through their email address. However, most people came directly to this place (like us). They waited for about 2-4 hours to try Phad Kee Mao Talay (drunken noodles with seafood), Poo Phad Phong Karee (stir-fried crab with yellow curry), and her legendary Khai Jeaw Poo (crab omelet).

TIPS: For walk-in customers, you can put your name on the list starts at 11am, and the owner begins cooking at 1.30pm. Remember, this place accept Payment in CASH ONLY!!!

We came here to try the famous crab omelet and Drunken noodle, which is made by the owner herself. Although the price is high, both dishes tasted delicious, especially the Crab Omelette (1,000 Baht). It’s properly cooked inside out, slightly crunchy on the edges, and stuffed with generous crab meat. It’s best to eat this with their Chili sauce for more flavor. The drunken noodle was tasty and came with two large muscled shrimps. A must-try when in Bangkok, Thailand!

5. Kuay Jab Mr. Joe (ร้านก๋วยจั๊บ มิสเตอร์โจ)

Looking for the best crispy pork in Bangkok? Oh, you gotta come to the famous Mr. Jo, which got listed in the Michelin guide. Over the years, Mr. Jo serves its famous crispy pork from a small local restaurant located at Chan Road. There was a crowd of people waiting in front of their shop when we arrived. Fortunately, the dining table was still available in the back area of the restaurant, so we directly go inside to find a table as suggested by their waiter. Here, we tried two of their signature menus, one of which was Guay Jab (rolled rice noodle served with slices of crispy pork belly in clear porky peppery soup for 60 Baht). Like most vendors, you can choose your Kuay Jab to be with or without intestines (Kuay Jab May Aow/Kruangnai). The noodles were soft, and we enjoyed the porky broth, although the soup’s flavor was quite mild; it wasn’t too salty and not too peppery.

But the most memorable thing was their legendary crispy pork belly (moo Krob หมูกรอบ). We ordered an extra 1/2 kg of Moo Krob as a side dish and didn’t regret it. The skin was incredibly crispy, while the meat was salted and so flavorful, perfectly deep-fried in their way. Guess what? We almost finished the entire plate because the crispy pork belly was not greasy at all; we really enjoyed it without guilt. The locals like to enjoy it with dark soy sauce as dipping, but we eat them just as it is, with no additional sauce. There’s no doubt it’s some of the best crispy pork (moo Krob หมูกรอบ) you must eat in Bangkok.

Tips: take the BTS to Saphan Taksin Station. From there, get a taxi to Mr. Jo (only one kilometer south to the restaurant).

6. Tung Sui Heng Pochana Duck Noodles

Another good finding in Bangkok, Thailand, is this place. An old-school eatery place that is also listed in the Michelin Guide 2019, and 2020. This family-owned eatery has been serving loyal customers for more than 50 years, no wonder, it’s crowded with locals, so we gotta wait for a table. I heard the locals love their Stewed Duck Hotpot, so we ordered this dish, followed by a portion of egg noodles with duck meat served pipping hot in a claypot, a plate of goose meat, and a portion of duck feet. There’s nothing special about the noodle, but the duck and goose meat was well-cooked and juicy. The stewed duck became another favorite too, it’s full of garlicky flavor and sweet soy sauce. If you want to be adventurous, you can try Duck Mouth because some people are really like it. It was not my favorite (a bit weird for me, they braised it and tasted a bit salty) but it’s a pleasant experience. Prices ain’t cheap, but the whole experience at Tung Sui Heng Pochana Duck Noodles was worth trying.

7. Go Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice Vs Kuang Heng Chicken Rice

Go-Ang Kaomunkai Pratunam Chicken Rice is very famous, and has longer queue than the green shop – Kuang Heng Chicken Rice. We tried the Chicken Rice (40 Baht, equal to IDR 17K) from this stall, and we concluded that, the food and drinks here are slightly cheaper than Kuang Heng, but Kuang Heng’s chicken tasted way better than Go-Ang’s chicken. The chicken at Go-Ang was too dry and tasteless, while Kuang Heng chicken was moist and tender. I also tried the Chicken Feet Soup (60 Baht, equal to IDR 25.8K), it was not bad, but overall, I didn’t get a good impression about the food at Go-Ang Chicken Rice, and we wonder why people still want to queue up that long. I guess, because the food is very cheap compared to other stalls. Find out more reviews about Go Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice VS Kuang Heng Chicken Rice
